Twilight: The Graphic Novel Volume 1

Young Kim. Twilight: The Graphic Novel Volume 1. Yen Press (2012). ISBN 978-0-3162-0488-0

Plot Summary

Twilight: The Graphic Novel is an interpretation of the novel by Stephenie Meyer.  It covers the story of Bella Swan, who moves to Forks, WA to live with her father Charlie.  She does this so her mom is free to travel with her sport playing boyfriend and not feel guilty about leaving Bella at home alone.  It chronicles the way Bella and Edward meet and follows their journey toward love.  This is only the first half of the book here.  It stops roughly half way through the actual novel.

Critical Evaluation

For some reason I'm wary of getting into Graphic Novels so I started with a book I know - Twilight.  I actually really enjoyed the Graphic Novel version.  The illustrations were great - I felt like those illustrations matched with what I pictured the characters to look like much more than the actors who are in the movies.  There was enough of the story written out that it made sense.  I was able to follow what was happening and that wasn’t just because I know the story very well.  The pictures played a huge role in telling the story.  Overall I think it added something to the novel that I didn’t even know was missing.

Reader’s Annotation

Ever wonder what Bella and Edward would look like if they were in a graphic novel?  Here’s your chance to find out.

Book Talking Ideas

If fans love Twilight but are not that into comics, this is the perfect chance for them to experience an amazing Graphic Novel adaptation of Twilight.  And maybe those who like graphic novels already but hate all things Twilight might give the story a chance in this medium.  Say what you will about the content, the illustrations are just beautiful.

Reading Level/Interest

14/14

Challenge Issues

I don’t seem many challenges coming from this comic.  The illustrations are clean and the parts of the story that some object to in Twilight are not as present in the graphic novel form.

Why Include This Title?

As I stated above, I’m not a huge fan of graphic novels but I needed to give it a shot so I picked something familiar.  I was glad I did because this is an amazing adaptation and one I think all fans will like.
